Travel ideas for Portugal
Historic cities, heritage, coastline and Atlantic scenery to explore in mainland Portugal, Madeira and the Azores, with separately planned connections.
YOUR JOURNEY, AT YOUR RHYTHM
What to discover in Portugal
- Lisbon: Explore Alfama, Baixa and the Tagus waterfront; set aside separate time for Belém and check visits to its monuments and museums individually.
- Porto: Explore Ribeira, the area around São Bento and the Douro waterfront. If you cross to Vila Nova de Gaia, arrange visits to wine lodges and other attractions separately.
- Sintra: Choose between the historic centre, the National Palace and the Park and Palace of Pena. Confirm the admission option, time slot and transport before combining several sites.
- Coimbra: Discover the University complex, the Old Cathedral and walks beside the Mondego. Check the visit options for the Joanine Library and other university spaces.
- Évora: Explore the historic centre between Praça do Giraldo, the Roman temple and the cathedral. Choose the monuments you want to visit and check their admission conditions.
- Algarve: Choose a base for exploring Faro, Tavira or Lagos and considering a visit to Ria Formosa. Check access, sea conditions and transport for any outing to beaches, islands or coastal trails.
- Madeira: Plan a separate stay for Funchal, viewpoints and laurel forest landscapes. Before following levadas or trails, check whether they are open, current conditions and any applicable reservations.
- Azores: Choose an island as your base, such as São Miguel with the landscapes of Sete Cidades. If you add other islands, check which air or sea connections operate for your route and dates.
Mainland Portugal: combine Lisbon and Sintra as a first area, or choose Porto and Coimbra according to your connections. Évora and the Algarve offer other possible stages; select areas that fit your time rather than linking all eight suggestions.
An Atlantic stay: consider Madeira or one of the Azores as a stay with its own arrival and transport arrangements. If you combine the mainland and archipelagos, or several islands, allow time for connections and confirm flights, boats and accommodation separately.
How to choose the stages of your trip to Portugal
The eight suggestions cover the mainland and two separate archipelagos. They are options for choosing bases and experiences, rather than one continuous circuit or a total number of days that includes travel between them.
Plan the islands as a separate stay
Check flights to your chosen island and the inter-island services that actually operate for your dates. Arrival on the mainland does not include travel to Madeira or the Azores, or travel between their islands.
Check sites and routes
In Sintra, check each monument's admission options and time slots, and how to get there. For trails, coastal visits and sea activities, check official notices, access and conditions on the day.
