San Antonio and the River Walk: Stroll beside the river and discover the Alamo and the heritage of the Spanish missions.
Austin: Combine the Texas State Capitol, Lady Bird Lake trails and the live music scene.
Houston and Space Center Houston: Explore city museums and space history in the Clear Lake area, southeast of downtown Houston.
Dallas and the Arts District: Discover art museums, architecture and cultural venues in downtown Dallas.
Fort Worth and the Stockyards: Explore historic buildings, western shops and the district's cattle heritage.
Big Bend National Park: Desert, mountains and Rio Grande canyons in remote West Texas; plan your drives and check park conditions.
Hill Country and Fredericksburg: Explore the rolling hills of Central Texas and a town with German heritage, Main Street, museums and local food.

Combine San Antonio and Austin with a stop in Fredericksburg for heritage, music and Hill Country scenery. Divide your stays between several bases and allow time for driving.
Choose a regional route: Houston with Galveston or Dallas with Fort Worth. Set aside a separate stage for Big Bend, far from these urban centers, based on your available days, weather and park conditions.
How to choose an area and plan journeys in Texas
The eight Texas ideas are alternatives across a large state, not one continuous itinerary. Choose a base or a group of regions first and confirm travel arrangements before booking timed visits.
Choose one part of the state
Consider San Antonio, Austin and Hill Country; Houston with Galveston; or Dallas with Fort Worth as different ways to organise your trip. There is no need to combine them all: spread visits among the bases that fit your available days and connections.
Set aside a separate stage for Big Bend
Big Bend is in remote western Texas. Check NPS directions, alerts and road and trail conditions; prepare fuel, water and supplies, and check that your vehicle is suitable for your chosen route. Do not assume every access point is open.
Separate admission from travel arrangements
Review the place, ticket option and terms of each booking, including Space Center Houston. Allow time to get there and return to your accommodation; a ticket does not automatically include transport, special activities or access to every part of a venue.
A focused review of the eight existing ideas and the sources on Big Bend directions, conditions and safety, plus Space Center Houston visitor information. Grouping by area is an editorial suggestion; it does not establish a new review of every provider, distance, driving time or availability.
